Women’s Aid NI recognises the link between trauma and experiencing domestic abuse, and the impact on the emotional, psychological and social wellbeing of people and communities.
We are committed to a trauma informed approach to our work, ensuring that all staff are trained to understand and recognise the effects of trauma on those experiencing domestic abuse.
We promote a supportive environment that minimises and addresses vicarious trauma among staff and prevents the potential re-traumatisation of the women and children who use our services. We are aware that the effects of traumatic experiences are unique to the individual and we believe that with appropriate trauma informed support women and children can build and develop resilience and mechanisms to manage their experiences. Our aim is to promote safety and to support the choice, control and autonomy of the people who use our services.
